Marketing CV's & Big Brands

A question we often get asked, particularly by technology marketing specialists is about how their next career move will look on their marketing CV in the future.

Many marketers who have built their careers in large global corporate technology companies or those companies who are household names are concerned about the impact on their marketing CV and professional profile if they move to a smaller company mid-career.

It’s understandable; if your marketing career to date has been based in large corporates then will moving to a smaller company look as though you have gone off track? Even if the opportunity is just to exciting to pass up?

WHAT I’VE SEEN OVER THE YEARS IN RECRUITING FOR MARKETING PEOPE IN TECHNOLOGY

My personal view is that you can’t change your experience, but you can add to it. Businesses are not looking for one narrow profile when it comes to experience any longer.

Thankfully, companies are embracing the opportunities that a marketing team with a diverse background can bring and generally like a mix of experience when it comes to the structure and type of organisation.

If we consider what it say on your CV about your marketing skills and experience, a mix demonstrates your ability to adapt to the constraints of different environments for example; whether these are budgetary in smaller businesses or creatively in larger corporates when much is centralised.

It is important to remember that even really huge companies have small off-shoots and love marketing people with a small company, scale-up mentality.

If you have only worked for large companies marketing teams are often siloed or centralised you will be missing a whole heap of experience both in soft skills and work experience

If you aspire to lead a team or head up a marketing department one day, my view is that having the combination of small and large experience is the dream combination!
